We’re super excited to delve into an important topic: gestational diabetes and how to manage it, along with nutrient support and much more. Dr. Ama, our resident expert and my wife, is excited to share her insights.
Understanding Gestational Diabetes
One key question we received was about the glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. Is it possible or safe to opt out? Ama didn’t take the test every time, instead, she would randomly check her blood sugar. Some women have found alternative testing methods, like the “jellybean test,” a fun yet tedious option involving consuming 28 jellybeans and measuring blood sugar an hour later.
Alternative Testing Options
There are several options besides the traditional glucose tolerance test. One of them is using a dextrose solution, but it’s crucial to calculate the correct amount. You can also use a home testing kit, which offers a more comprehensive picture of your blood sugar patterns over a week with food logs for correlation.
When to Test for Gestational Diabetes
Typically, monitoring starts around 26 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. If you’re considering an alternative to the standard tests, you might choose the home glucose readings, which can offer valuable insights into how your body processes meals during pregnancy.
Preventative Measures and Nutrient Support
Gestational diabetes is more than just a concern; it also increases the risk of complications like diabetes post-pregnancy, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. It’s best to have your thyroid, iron, vitamin D, magnesium, and B12 levels checked prior to getting pregnant. These markers play significant roles in maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
Lifestyle and Dietary Choices
- Avoid secondhand smoke, which increases the risk of diabetes by affecting hemoglobin A1C levels and insulin sensitivity.
- Taking magnesium supplements can decrease gestational diabetes risks significantly.
- Vitamin D paired with magnesium enhances your body’s glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.
- Myo-Inositol is another game-changer. It’s especially beneficial for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome or those struggling with gestational diabetes. Taking myo-Inositol can make a huge difference in managing cravings and aiding in insulin management.
- Exercise plays a critical role in pregnancy health. A simple 15-minute post-meal walk can improve insulin sensitivity and keep your glucose levels stable.

Tackling Nausea and Heartburn
Nausea and heartburn are common during pregnancy. Here are a few recommendations that Ama has found helpful:
- B6, B12 injections
- Digestive enzymes
- Licorice chewables
- Liquid calcium magnesium
Pregnancy doesn’t have to be daunting; with the right support and knowledge, it can truly be a joyous, life-giving process. If you have questions or want more tips, feel free to share them with us. We’d love to consider more videos to support your pregnancy journey.
